Who is Bud?

BudsCustomers are always asking to meet Bud but did you know that the “Bud’s” in Bud’s Warehouse actually stands for Building Unity & Dignity through Service?

A lot of people know that Bud’s Warehouse is Denver’s original and best home improvement thrift store. But not everyone knows that Bud’s is also a non-profit job-training program for individuals rebuilding lives from addiction, homelessness and prison.

Bud’s Warehouse hires and trains individuals who have significant barriers to employment. Every morning before the store opens, Bud’s employees and volunteers gather for on-site trainings. The Bud’s Warehouse training program is designed to combine workplace experience with trainings that equip employees for transition to full-time, self-sufficient employment.

Our employees participate in a one year program and go through an individualized life skills curriculum that includes such topics as: healthy living, job development, personal finance, computer skills, and interviewing for new jobs (among others). We also do weekly one-on-one case management that covers personal and professional goal setting and transitioning into independent living. Our program was even recently featured on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s national website.

When you shop at Bud’s you directly support our mission and our employees. We’re always looking for partners to benefit our staff – do you have a skill you could help us train in or know someone who would be willing to consider one of our graduates for employment? Just let us know.

New & Lightly Used Home Improvement Items Help Rebuild Lives

Bud’s Warehouse, a nonprofit job training program of Belay Enterprises, provides a solution to the dilemma of remodeling left-over’s.

16 years ago, a group of contractors, businesspeople, and urban pastors started Bud’s to keep usable building materials out of landfills as well as to offer job-training opportunities for individuals struggling with addiction, homelessness or prison records.

Bud’s Warehouse recycles usable building items not accepted by regular thrift stores. Home builders, suppliers and homeowners donate items like cabinets, appliances, tile, paint, carpet, hardware, light fixtures, doors, windows, bath tubs, sinks, and many other building materials. These are then resold to the public at discounts of up to 70%. Check out the latest arrivals on Bud’s Facebook page.

In addition to recycling building materials, Bud’s Warehouse also “recycles” people’s lives. For a variety of reasons, from prison records to drug addiction, numerous city residents are unable to find or keep a job. Bud’s Warehouse employs formerly unemployable people, providing them with training for both employment and life. The sale of home improvement items enables the program to be self-supporting and model self-sufficiency for its participants.

The Mission Behind Bud’s

Bud’s Warehouse has been Denver’s Home improvement thrift store since 1995. The warehouse offers an ever-changing selection of new and used doors, windows, cabinets and more at prices up to 70% off retail. With new products and customers coming and going every day it’s easy to miss out on the big picture at Bud’s.

Aside from diverting items from the landfill and offering great deals on building supplies, the staff at Bud’s work hard to create employment opportunities for people rebuilding lives from prison, addictions and homelessness.

As a program of Belay Enterprises, Bud’s hires and trains individuals who are unable to find employment due to significant barriers from the job market. Employees stay with Bud’s for 6-12 months and receive classroom and on-the-job training during their tenure. By the time someone leaves Bud’s for another job in the community, they have trained in areas including computers, personal finances, sales, customer service, received their forklift certification and much more.

Donating and shopping at Bud’s Warehouse directly funds the job-training program and helps create other employment opportunities such as New Beginnings Custom Woodworking and the Good Neighbor Garage.

Next time you shop at Bud’s Warehouse you can feel good knowing the great deal you found also helped support someone who is embarking on a new direction in life. You can support Bud’s by donating too, find out more here.
